Unbeknownst to the neighbors, hidden beneath this home is a vast secret hideout. Surrounded by a small army of minions, we discover Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), planning the biggest heist in the history of the world. He is going to steal the moon. (Yes, the moon!) Gru delights in all things wicked. Armed with his arsenal of shrink rays, freeze rays, and battle-ready vehicles for land and air, he vanquishes all who stand in his way. Until the day he encounters the immense will of three little orphaned girls who look at him and see something that no one else has ever seen: a potential Dad. The world's greatest villain has just met his greatest challenge: three little girls named Margo, Edith and Agnes

Run Time: 95 Minutes

Movie Review:

Despicable Me was one of the most hyped movies of Summer 2010, with advertisements proliferating the net and television since at least early May (the movie was released July 9th). Because of all of this hype, as well as a significant amount of footage shown during this advertising campaign I was expecting that this movie was going to fall flat, especially with the recent success of well established franchises such as Toy Story and Shrek.

I was pleasantly proven wrong after only a few minutes into the film. A good deal of "footage" from this movie that was in the advertisements was in fact not in the movie, so it didn't have to rely on jokes which people already had seen hundreds of times. There were plenty of jokes to go around, ranging from the dark comedy of lead character Gru, to the slapstick comedy of the minions, to the cutesy-type comedy of the three little girls.

But this movie is not just a comic relief type flick. As with many other movies focused towards children it has a very heartwarming message about being a family and adoption.

Steve Carell, of The Office fame, plays the lead character Gru and would would not recognize his voice nor his normal comedic style in this movie. In fact, those changes are quite refreshing to see Mr. Carell do, as he has been caught in the same sort of comedy in the last few years because of his The Office character. Julie Andrews shows us once again her impressive acting range with another fine comedic performance as Gru's mother. Other popular comedians from SNL fame do a fine performance as well.

Overall I rate this movie as one of the best movies to see this summer so far. The movie has a definitive ending, which shouldn't leave much room for a sequel (although it has been done before), much like Wall-E, and I think that is a good thing. There are a great many instances in this movie which play towards the now popular 3D audiences, so if you get a chance to see it in 3D, do so.

Movie Review photo credit: Flickr.com

Overall Movie Review Rating: I rate this movie as a Must See - 4.5 stars

Free Advance Screening of Temple Grandin

This is an Entertainment Weekly movie.

Sign up to get passes to a FREE Advance Movie Screening which will premier on Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010.

Entertainment Weekly invites you and a guest to a special advance screening of Temple Grandin, a new movie from HBO airing Saturday, February 6 at 8PM. She tries hat making, bridge, and then cooking lessons at Cordon Bleu. It's there she discovers her passion. In 2002, Julie Powell, underemployed and a failed novelist, about to turn 30, decides to cook her way through "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" in a year and to blog about it. These stories intertwine of two women learning to cook and finding success. Sympathetic, loving husbands support them both, and friendships, too, add zest.

Run Time: 123 Minutes

Movie Review:

I had great expectations before watching Julie & Julia. The idea behind it is inspiring, committing oneself to a project for one year in an attempt to turn ones life around. The casting was a good selling point, and the advertising really made it a movie that I wanted to see.

Unfortunately, I was disappointed when I finally saw it. Half of the movie was superb, while the other half was just iffy. The superb part was the semi-biopic part of Julia Child, played by Meryl Streep. This should have been the whole movie. The relationship between Julia and her husband, brilliantly played by Stanley Tucci, was engaging, funny, and absolutely interesting. Streep and Tucci's chemistry in Julie & Julia was spot on and quite believable. This pairing saves Julie & Julia from being an overcooked nightmare and turns it into a servable lunch.

The "modern" half of Julie & Julia, the story of Julie Powell, played by Amy Adams, just had no "meat" to it. The whole section tied itself upon her first recipe made. Adams does a great job at playing a very uninteresting character, but can not save this part of the movie alone. Nor does Chris Messina, who believably plays Julie's husband, help her.

All in all I would have liked to see more from each story line. Julie's story could have been much more interesting given more character development and Julia's story was so engaging I just wanted to see more of it. The great constant which tie these two sides together is of course the food. You will indeed drool over some of the food which is shown in Julie & Julia. Make sure to do your grocery shopping before watching this movie so that when you finish watching it and are starving you have motivation.

Movie Review photo credit: movies.yahoo.com

Overall Movie Review Rating: I rate this movie as a Good See - 3 stars

Drama Movie Review: Up in the Air

This is a movie review of Up in the Air.

Plot Summary (courtesy of IMDB):

Ryan Bingham's job is to fire people from theirs. The anguish, hostility, and despair of his "clients" has left him falsely compassionate, living out of a suitcase, and loving every second of it. When his boss hires arrogant young Natalie, she develops a method of video conferencing that will allow termination without ever leaving the office - essentially threatening the existence Ryan so cherishes. Determined to show the naive girl the error of her logic, Ryan takes her on one of his cross country firing expeditions, but as she starts to realize the disheartening realities of her profession, he begins to see the downfalls to his way of life

Run Time: 109 Minutes

Movie Review:

As Up in the Air starts we find out the main character's job is to travel around the country to fire people. With Up in the Air coming out in a poor economic climate I was expecting this movie to focus a little more on this idea. While Up in the Air does do this to some extent the movie does not focus on this topic. Instead, it focuses on the main characters life and his relationship with others. There were a lot of good moments, but i found myself getting bored with the movie in some parts where it was slowing down. A lot of the ending of the Up in the Air is extremely predictable. I was not surprised by anything that happened, and neither were the people sitting behind me who happily predicted each scene for the final 30 minutes.

Up in the Air has been nominated for multiple awards already, but I do not see why. It is not George Clooney's strongest acting job, although he delivers the few jokes in a great monotone. Most of accolades that have so far been associated with Up in the Air feel more like industry insider choices than actual earned awards. There were too many scenes which seemed more like commercials for Hertz, American Airlines, and various hotel chains than actual theatrical performance. In fact, one of the main points of the movie was a quest to gain a special frequent fliers card from American Airlines, a point which came up far too often to not be considered a blatant advertisement.

Going into the viewing of Up in the Air I had much higher expectations than what I came out with. I recommend waiting until this comes out on DVD so you can rent it and watch it once. Or watch it when you fly with American Airlines as they are sure to overplay it on their flights as soon as they can.

Movie Review photo credit: movies.yahoo.com

Overall Movie Review Rating: I rate this movie as a Blah See - 2 stars

Animated Movie Review: Bolt

This is a movie review of Bolt.

Plot Summary (courtesy of Netflix):

Nominated for a Best Animated Feature Oscar and Golden Globe, this tale of adventure follows dashing German shepherd Bolt, a canine actor forced to make an action-filled cross-country trek when he's mistakenly shipped from Hollywood to New York City. Believing that he and his fictional character are one and the same, Bolt gets a glimpse of what it takes to be a real hero.

Run Time: 97 Minutes

Movie Review:

I watch a lot of animated and kids movies, but I don't normally have the opportunity to watch them with children. Bolt, however, I did get to watch with a 4 year old. Although this movie clocks in at just over an hour and a half my viewing partners attention rarely got away from the movie.

The reason is that the story of Bolt is engaging, fast paces, and interesting. There is a lot of action and in each scene you want to know what is going to happen to Bolt next. Many scenes are very funny for both children and adults.

The one issue I had with this movie is that it is packed full of product placement. There are ads in a large amount of scenes. At times it felt like I was watching a commercial instead of a movie. Kids won't recognize it as much, but it became an eyesore for myself as I was watching it.

Bolt does not have the endearment of Nemo nor is it the animated masterpiece like Shrek, but it does have its moments and is worth watching. Just don't be surprised if your child wants a cute white dog in the near future.

Movie Review photo credit: Amazon.com

Overall Movie Review Rating: I rate this movie as a Great See - 4 stars

Animated Movie Review: Igor

This is a movie review of Igor.

Plot Summary (courtesy of Netflix):

Igor (voiced by John Cusack) is a brilliant young scientist sidelined by a physical deformity. Not because of some innate brilliance, but because of it's dark undertones. This is a movie which reminds one of other classic dark animated movies, like The Nightmare Before Christmas.

The violent scenes are played up as jokes and the marketing for Igor is focused towards the younger audience. While I don't think that kids will have nightmares over someone being blown up or another being crushed to death (and the death being acknowledged by the main characters) I think that this movie should come with a bit of a warning about such things.

Aside from that, I did enjoy Igor. It has good messages and there are some really funny scenes. With Halloween upon us soon, this is a good movie to celebrate the season with as long as it's with parental guidance.

Movie Review photo credit: igortrailer.com

Overall Movie Review Rating: I rate this movie as a Good See - 3 stars

Comedy Movie Review: The Brothers Bloom

This is a movie review of The Brothers Bloom.

Plot Summary (courtesy of IMDB):

Brothers - older Stephen and three years junior Bloom - have been con artists since they were kids. Stephen is the mastermind, for who the intricacy of the story used in the con is as important as the positive outcome of the swindle. Bloom is the main character of Stephen's stories, the character he considers the anti-hero. As adults, they travel the world and never enlist the same people twice in their cons, except for their consistent sidekick, the mysterious and primarily silent Bang Bang, a Japanese woman who just appeared in their lives one day and who has a penchant for blowing things up. As Bloom hits his mid-thirties, he wants to quit the business as he is losing his own identity to that of the characters he portrays; he doesn't know anymore what is real and what is make-believe. Stephen talks him into one last con, the mark to be the eccentric, lonely but beautiful New Jersey heiress, Penelope Stamp. Penelope's primary past-time in life is to, as she calls it, "borrow hobbies": when she sees something she likes, she learns how to do it solely through reading books. As the brothers go through their final con on Penelope, three main problems may occur to thwart the plan. First, the brothers' former mentor and now arch enemy, Diamond Dog, may exact his long awaited revenge on the brothers. Second, Penelope may end up being more unpredictable than all their former marks. And third, Bloom, who has let love slip by in his life, may fall for Penelope. But through the process, no one ever really knows who is conning who.

Run Time: 113 Minutes

Movie Review:

I was hoping to see this moving in the theater, but it only had a limited short run which did not include any nearby theaters. Still, I had very high expectations for seeing this movie and was pleasantly awarded with expectations fulfilled. It had such a large All Star cast and what seemed to be a fairly large effects and travel budget I am still surprised to see that it never made it to a wider distribution.

This Brothers Bloom is a quirky, romantic, action packed adventure with many twists and turns. There are some things you think are going to happen that don't and vice versa. The ending to this move is superb. Rachel Weisz and Rinko Kikuchi are absolutely hilarious in this movie. Weisz's character crashes a Lamborghini a few times and she just comes out aloof and does it again. There is even a scene of her skateboarding which is funny (albeit, most of that scene is in the previews). Rinko Kikuchi is silent about 98% of the movie but her physical actions and faces are just superb. She gets my vote as MVP of The Brothers Bloom.

The only reason I didn't give The Brothers Bloom 5 stars is that there is just something about it that just doesn't wow me to the point of perfection. I can't quite place it, but there is something missing that would give it that oomph to be a perfect movie. Still, this movie is definitely in my top 10 list for this year, and I am absolutely going to include this in my dvd collection. If you liked movies such as Oceans 11 or The Italian Job then you will love The Brothers Bloom as well.

Movie Review photo credit: Amazon.com

Overall Movie Review Rating: I rate this movie as a Great See - 4.5 stars

Romantic Comedy Movie Review: No Reservations

This is a movie review of No Reservations.

Movie Summary (courtesy of Amazon.com):

A perfectionist chef addicted to her work struggles to adjust when her sister passes away leaving her with a little girl to raise and a new soup-chef threatens to take over her kitchen with his high-spirited and free-wheeling ways.

Run Time: 104 Minutes

Movie Review:

I just love Catherine Zeta-Jones and in my opinion, it is not the actors fault when a movie director and script writer gives them something to work with that isn't written properly. I have seen this too many times with movies. The actors are blamed for the movie failing when it isn't their fault at all. Catherine is a wonderful actress and so were the other main actors, Aaron Eckhart and Abigail Breslin.

There were parts of this movie that were good but as with many movies that seem to go right to DVD it's like there are 3 or 4 movies mixed in one because there are plots all mixed up together. And, there was way too much crying. I had thought it was a comedy but there was tragedy and lots of sorrow mixed in that just didn't seem to fit the comedic part. Like I said, several movies mixed up into one.

The movie was dragging to because I found myself watching the clock and that is not a good sign. If I'm bored there's something wrong.

Overall, it wasn't a total wash. There were good parts to it, slow areas (popcorn break) and some tender moments that I appreciated. Would I watch it again? Sorry, no.

Movie Review photo credit: Amazon

Overall Movie Review Rating: I rate this movie as a Blah See - 2.5 stars

Romantic Comedy Movie Review: Ghost Town

This is a movie review of Ghost Town with Ricky Gervais, Greg Kinear, and Tea Leoni. When Bertram crosses paths with the recently departed Frank Herlihy (Greg Kinnear), he gets pulled into Frank's desperate bid to break up his widowed wife's (Téa Leoni) pending marriage to another man.

Run Time: 102 Minutes

Movie Review:

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Frank Herlihy (Greg Kinnear) starts off the movie so you think he is the main character but the movie actually revolves around Bertram Pincus (Ricky Gervais) who goes into the hospital for a routine operation and starts seeing people. He realizes they are dead so he goes back to the hospital to find out that he actually died for 7 minutes. Do you think they were going to tell him? Of course not.

Mr. Pincus (dentist by trade) is a stuffy man who hates life and everyone in it. He feels that everyone is in his way and tries to avoid people at all costs. He is self-centered and mean most of the time. Over the course of the movie he gets funnier and funnier as his dry humor comes out.

In the end he realizes that he needs people and he comes out of his selfish shells to help others. I shed a tear at the end. This movie had twists and turns that I didn't expect and all three main characters were great. I definitely think you should check out Ghost Town because you will be pleasantly surprised at the storyline.

Movie Review photo credit: Netflix

Overall Movie Review Rating: I rate this movie as a Must See - 4.5 stars

Action Movie Review: Transporter 2

This is a movie review of Transporter 2.

Plot Summary (courtesy of IMDB):

Former soldier turned hired criminal Frank Martin, now living in Miami, has been hired for his latest assignment. Frank has been hired as a bodyguard to Jack Billings, son of Jefferson Billings, a wealthy US official for the US government drug control organization who is attending a conference with the DEA. When Jack is kidnapped by a international crime boss known as Gianni and his associates including his murderous lover Lola and gets implicated in the kidnapping, Frank with help of trusted friend, French police detective Tarconi, sets out to rescue Jack and takes on Gianni and his henchmen, as Gianni infects Jack with a engineered virus which will infect those who come into contact with Jack, as Gianni plans to infect Jefferson and sabotage the conference.

Run Time: 87 Minutes

Movie Review:

My memory of the original Transporter movie is vague so I can't really compare the two movies. I do know that the format for this movie is much different than even the title suggests, but because the franchise is not that well established I did not feel that it worked against he movie. In fact, the main character even admits that his normal role is much different that what is played here.

Jason Statham does a great job at portraying a cold and seemingly feeling-less protagonist that also feels inviting and human. He nails his performance home by doing his own stunts, some of which are quite moving. The fight scene using a fire hose is quite imaginative and reminds me of similarly interesting fight scenes done by the likes of Jackie Chan and Jet Li.

Transporter 2 is purely about the action and it delivers. The lack of CGI and the plethora of physical action scenes help make this movie more down to earth and fun than if it was digitized. The plot isn't anything to write home about but it doesn't need to be, it just needed to be good enough for the action to have meaning and that is what it does.

Movie Review photo credit: movieforums.com

Overall Movie Review Rating: I rate this movie as a Good See - 3.5 stars

Kids Movie Review: UP

This is a movie review of UP.

Plot Summary (courtesy of IMDB):

A young Carl Fredrickson meets a young adventure spirited girl named Ellie. In their first feature film in the new Disney Digital 3D you would expect them to flex their muscle and show spectacular things. They did not disappoint, however, the movie was not about these things as they often are. Instead, they focused on a story that was both moving and fun.

The 3D, which starts with the trailers, has come a long way since the attempts where the audience wore red and blue glasses. This 3D is a much more believable and the full immersion effect is only limited by your theatre sound system and size. Sitting in a spot where you get a full panoramic of the theatre rather than just the image will greatly detract from your experience. I am a person who has superior vision and often attempts at 3D fail with me my eyes overcompensate. With the glasses for Up I had no problems and suffered no ill effect (I generally get headaches from 3D movie attempts). As the previews for many upcoming movies suggest, this is the new wave of the future for animated movies, if not in general.

While I really enjoyed the story line in UP it was also my only qualm. Being a film focused towards children I felt the death aspect was a little heavy for children who have already experienced it. However, it is good that Disney and Pixar are acknowledging their adult audiences (there were no children in the viewing I went to) by adding some more "grown-up" themes. For older children this could lead to good opportunities to discuss with them the themes in the movie.

Although I still hold Wall-E and Ratatouille to be my favorite animated movies by Pixar, this comes in a close 3rd. I am interested to see if Pixar will be able to recreate the viewing experience for DVD. Regardless, this movie will stand on it's own without having the 3D added to it. But parents, keep in mind this movie got a PG rating for a reason. Expect some of this movie to not be something that younger kids would enjoy.

Movie Review photo credit: movies.yahoo.com

Overall Movie Review Rating: I rate this movie as a Great See - 4 stars

Action Movie Review: Quantum of Solace

This is a movie review of Quantum of Solace.

Plot Summary (courtesy of IMDB):

Is there solace in revenge? Bond and "M" sniff a shadowy international network of power and corruption reaping billions. As Bond pursues the agents of an assassination attempt on "M," all roads lead to Dominic Greene, a world-renowned developer of green technology. Greene, a nasty piece of work, is intent on securing a barren area of Bolivia in exchange for assisting a strongman stage a coup there. The CIA looks the other way, and only Bond, with help from a retired spy and from a mysterious beauty, stands in Greene's way. "M" wonders if she can trust Bond, or if vengeance possesses him. Beyond that, can anyone drawn to Bond live to tell the tale?

Run Time: 106 Minutes

Movie Review:

I am a huge fan of Bond films, but this time around I'm not so sure. Bond films are known to be action, gadgets, and girls packed into one movie. While Quantum of Solace had some of the obligatory elements, it focused much harder on a personal story. This story is good it does not work in the Bond "world".

Bond movies aren't about his feelings or thoughts, just about a guy that gets the job done through some amazing theatrics. The attempts to humanize the character change this into a completely different story. While I can appreciate this normally, I really felt that it didn't belong in this series.

Aside from what I consider to be quite a large blunder the remainder of Quantum of Solace was pretty decent. The action scenes were well done and Daniel Craig really proves that he deserves to be James Bond. I did not, however find this movie to be very engaging. In fact, I found myself staring out of the window through some scenes and forcing myself to come back and refocus on the movie.

Overall I found that I have very contradicting opinions on Quantum of Solace. On one hand I find I have a lot issues with this installment of Bond flicks, but I also enjoyed it enough not to hate it. There were enough beautiful exotic scenes and action to keep me loyal. I still would rate Quantum of Solace pretty low against all other Bond films and certainly towards the bottom of any recent action films.

Movie Review photo credit: www.impawards.com

Overall Movie Review Rating: I rate this movie as a Blah See - 2.5 stars

Kids Movie Review: Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian

This is a movie review of Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian.

Plot Summary (courtesy of IMDB):

When the Museum of Natural History is closed for upgrades and renovations, the museum pieces are moved into federal storage at the famous Smithsonian Museums. The centerpiece of the film will be bringing to life the Smithsonian Institution, which houses the world's largest museum complex with more than 136 million items in its collections, ranging from the plane Amelia Earhart (Amy Adams) flew on her non-stop solo flight across the Atlantic and Al Capone's (Jon Bernthal) rap sheet and mug shot to Dorothy's ruby slippers, Fonzie's jacket from Happy Days, the still from M*A*S*H and Archie Bunker's lounge chair from All in the Family. Larry (Ben Stiller) poses as a caretaker at the Smithsonian, where Kahmunrah (Hank Azaria), an evil Pharaoh, will come to life with the reestablishing of a tablet as a magical force in the museum bringing the old exhibits (Such as Theodore Roosevelt and Dexter) and new exhibits (like General Custer and Al Capone) back to life, and in conflict with each other. Larry enlists the help of Amelia Earheart, and together they try to put everything back in order.

Run Time: 105 Minutes

Movie Review:

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian was a fun movie and well worth the experience.

All of the familiar faces of the original movie reprise theirs roles with a few new faces added. Ben Stiller once again puts on a believable action figure style comedy role as Larry. Amy Adams plays a very believanel and funny portrayal of Amelia Earhart. This movie is not about the acting though.

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian is about the action and fun, of which there is plenty. This time the story is not about trying to keep the exhibits in the museum, but something more dangerous. In fact, the characters this time around don't seem to care about the same issues in the first movie which I felt was horribly inconsistent.

As with all performance art, the job of a movie is to give us a suspense of disbelief. The problem with Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian is that they went way too far with it and it ruined portions of the movie. Such things are destroying a whole outside wall of a museum and it magically being repaired by morning or that only one security guard could be working at night in the whole Smithsonian complex alone was just too much for me.

With the inconsistencies between the first movie and this one along with the excessive stretching of the suspension of disbelief I can not get behind this movie as one of this summers best. However, it was a fun movie and the kids will enjoy the humor and action in it.

Movie Review photo credit: movies.yahoo.com

Overall Movie Review Rating: I rate this movie as a Great See - 4 stars

Star Trek Art Canvas Giveaway Winner

The winner for the Star Trek Art Canvas Giveaway is Justin J.

Justin has been notified by email.

Justin has won a Star Trek art canvas from Framed Arts that is valued at $300 and highly collectible.

About Framed Arts

Framed-Arts.com is a family business owned and operated by Treasure and Jim Phillips. Kirk (Chris Pine) joins Star Fleet. He doesn't take it seriously and cheats on a test. Which doesn't impress Spock (Zachary Quinto) much since he's all for going by the rules. They don't get along, but a Romulan attack on the Enterprise they're on might just be enough to force them to work together.

Run Time: 120 Minutes

Movie Review:

J.J. Abrams reboot of the Star Trek franchise was expertly done. Much was expected for this movie and much was given. Not for the first time in many, many years has a Star Trek movie been so good.

The alternate universe and time travel has been done so many times before on Star Trek movies and shows in the past that revisiting it could have been very dangerous. But Abrams does it expertly to the point that you realize that it is just Star Trek's best plot device.

The acting is well done. Chris Pine's portrayal of James T. Kirk is his own and does not seem to have been influenced by William Shattner's previous performances of the role. Zachary Quinto puts on a fine performance as Spock and is able to break from his role in Hero's as the villain Sylar. In general there are no poor acting choices by any of the actors and the casting was superb. I admit that I went into the movie with lower expectations because of some of the actor choices but I was pleasantly surprised at them in the end.

The filming was nothing short of great. Cinemetographer Daniel Mindel deliberately uses lens flares (a photographic effect where light sparkles everywhere) in many scenes that gives a surreal sci fi feel to the movie and looks much better than CGI would have looked.

J.J. Abrams Star Trek is a movie which will please all the "Trekkies" but will also serve to gain fans that have never seen anything in this franchise.

Movie Review photo credit: www.framed-arts.com

Overall Movie Review Rating: I rate this movie as a Great See - 4.5 stars

Custom Framed Star Trek Movie Art Canvas Giveaway Ends 5/30/09

Do you just love Star Trek movies? Here she hopes to find the tranquility she so desperately needs to rethink the conflicts surrounding her -- a wayward husband who has asked to come home, and a teen-aged daughter who resents her every decision. Almost as soon as Adrienne gets to Rodanthe, a major storm is forecast and a guest named Dr. Paul Flanner arrive. The only guest at the inn, Flanner is not on a weekend escape but rather is there to face his own crisis of conscience. Now, with the storm closing in, the two turn to each other for comfort and, in one magical weekend, set in motion a life-changing romance that will resonate throughout the rest of their lives

Run Time: 97 Minutes

Movie Review:

This is the second movie made from a Nicholas Sparks movie I have watched within the last week and it is the second of which I just did not enjoy. The plot to Nights in Rodanthe was almost identical to Message in a Bottle with a few minor changes. Instead of grieving an ex the main male character was coming to terms with a mistake and other family issues. The female main character had almost the same baggage coming into the movie.

Richard Gere and Diane Lane are great romantic leads, but not this time. In this movie they just didn't click and their chemistry was just not there. Richard Gere specifically just didn't have the depth that the character needed to portray believably.

Once again there are some great beauty shots of the Outer Banks. Here specifically it's the amazing beach house (as that is where 90% of the movie takes place). But that is about the only thing aside from a supporting character who's grieving played by Scott Glenn.

If you want a well done love story, tear-jerker, or Nicholas Sparks novel-turned-movie go watch The Notebook. If you want something that falls short in all points then watch this one.

Movie Review photo credit: www.filmmonthly.com

Overall Movie Review Rating: I rate this movie as a Blah See - 2 stars

Drama Movie Review: W.

This is a movie review of W.

Plot Summary (courtesy of IMDB):

Oliver Stone's biographical take on the life of George W. Bush, one of the most controversial, secretive, cynical, and ruthless president in USA history, chronicling from 1967 to his wild and carefree days in college, to his military service, to his governorship of Texas and oil businesses, leading to his 2000 candidacy for president, his first turbulent four years to his 2004 re-election campaign.

Run Time: 129 Minutes

Movie Review:

Oliver Stone's biopic of President George W. Bush while he was in office does a good job at attempting to humanize a leader who was so controversial and eventually hated in his time in office. Rather than making another movie which stabs at the failures constantly, this movie works towards showing that the person behind the failures is in fact a human being.

The casting in this movie was pretty spot on in most cases. Josh Brolin does a great job in his portrayal of W. as does Elizabeth Banks, who plays his wife Laura Bush. However, some of the portrayals were attrocious. Thandie Newton's portrayal of Condoleezza Rice was not only demeaning but looked like her research was done completely via Saturday Night Live skits.

While the movie tries to be as politically neutral as possible there are obvious political statements made throughout the movie. This movie is by no means a strict biography and therefore will not really hold sway over George W. Bushes time in office but I do feel like it is a great movie to watch to put things in perspective. It shows that no mater how great of a leader you get to become making poor choices and listening to the wrong people will always have its consequences.

Movie Review photo credit: wikipedia.org

Overall Movie Review Rating: I rate this movie as a Good See - 3.5 stars

Romance Movie Review: Message in a Bottle

This is a movie review of Message in a Bottle.

Plot Summary (courtesy of Netflix):Based on Nicholas Sparks's best-selling novel, director Luis Mandoki's romantic drama explores the possibility of love amid heartache. Newspaper researcher Theresa Osborne (Robin Wright Penn) finds a letter in a bottle penned by grieving shipbuilder Garret Blake (Kevin Costner), who writes to ease the pain of his wife's death. Carrying her own emotional baggage, Theresa tracks him down -- but their growing attraction is endangered by their pasts.

Run Time: 131 Minutes

Movie Review:

Nicholas Sparks has been fortunate to have many of his books converted into movies, and most of them have been very very good. However, this one was horribly done.

There were some beautiful shots of the Outer Banks and for boat lovers there were definitely some very nice boat eye candy. But aside from that, there is not much else positive to this movie.

The letter's in the movie weren't even the same ones from the book and the story didn't have the same intensity that the book had. Kevin Coster as Garret was a poor choice in the first place and he really didn't even play the part well. Paul Newman as Garret's father was a great choice and really was the only good thing about the acting in the movie.

All in all this movie just drug on for the full seemingly unending 2+ hours. There was nothing interesting about the movie. You would be better off picking up the book and finish it in the time that the movie took.

Movie Review photo credit:Wikipedia.org

Overall Movie Review Rating: I rate this movie as a Blah See - 2 stars

The Good Movie Reviewer SNL Giveaway

This is the first giveaway for The Good Movie Reviewer. All of a sudden, they land in the wilderness of Africa, where Alex meets the rest of his family, but has trouble communicating with them after spending so much time at the Central Park Zoo

Run Time: 89 Minutes

Movie Review:

Very seldom does a sequel outshine the original. In Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa's case this is absolutely true. The story, animation, and comedy were all superior to the original.

Right out of the gate this movie seeks to lighten the mood of the viewer with joke after joke. And when things start getting too serious throughout the movie there is always some random event that just makes you burst out in laughter. That being said, it's not all just fun and games, there is a story to be told here and the plot comes out loud and clear to anyone watching. Themes of impressing your family, being unique, and friendship have a strong foothold in this movie and are well played out.

All in all this movie was one of the best that I have seen so far in recent history. It's a light hearted fun romp aimed directly at kids. There isn't that many adult directed jokes throughout the movie which may disappoint the grown up watchers but Madagascar never pretends to be aimed to anyone but children.

Movie Review photo credit: movies.yahoo.com

Overall Movie Review Rating: I rate this movie as a Must See - 5 stars

Comedy Movie Review: Burn After Reading

This is a movie review of Burn After Reading.

Plot Summary (courtesy of IMDB):

Osbourne Cox, a Balkan expert, is fired at the CIA, so he begins a memoir. His wife wants a divorce and expects her lover, Harry, a philandering State Department marshal, to leave his wife. A diskette of Osbourne's musings falls out of a gym bag at a Georgetown fitness center. Two employees there try to turn it into cash: Linda, who wants money for elective surgery, and Chad, an amiable goof. They try to sell the disc back to Osbourne, who has a short fuse, then they visit the Russian embassy. To sweeten the pot, they decide they need more of Osbourne's secrets. Meanwhile, Linda's boss likes her, and Harry's wife leaves for a book tour. All roads lead to Osbourne's house.

Run Time: 96 Minutes

Movie Review:

Burn After Reading, shows that the Coen Brothers (Fargo, Oh Brother Where Art Though, No Country For Old Men) sometimes get it wrong. This movie is a mid-life crisis faux spy flick that goes no where.

Third in their self titled "Idiot Trilogy" the brothers wrote all parts but one for every specific actor that was in the movie. Some of them work and some of them don't. Brad Pitt as an idiot fitness instructor works about as well as Angelina Jolie playing the mother on "Leave it to Beaver." The Coen Brothers use their familiar writing and directing style to try to tell this story. But they bring nothing fresh to the table. Their wittiness that was in previous movies just seems old and stale in this one. And their choice of the same actors over and over has gotten redundant. They need to start working with new talent more frequently so they don't get into a boring rut such as this movie gives us.

There are some funny parts throughout the movie and an older target audience would find more to relate to. The idea of mid-life crisis are well played throughout the movie and Frances McDormand (Joel Coen's wife) puts off a great performance as a gym employee who wants to remake herself through plastic surgery, which in turn gets her involved in the movies scheme.

Movie Review photo credit: wikipedia.org

Overall Movie Review Rating: I rate this movie as a Blah See - 2.5 stars

Independent Movie Review: Noise

This is a movie review of Noise (2008).

Plot Summary (courtesy of IMDB):

A black comedy about a man caught in the most impossible of conundrums: in love with his hometown, New York City, but driven mad by its noise. Transforming himself into "The Rectifier", David takes on everyone from the schmuck who ignores his own car alarm to the city's most powerful citizen, the Mayor. As his daring grows, New Yorkers rally behind him inspiring David to win this fight by the most ingenious of schemes.

Run Time: 91 Minutes

Movie Review:

Noise is an independent movie with lots of Hollywoods big names in it. Unfortunately for the movie, the two don't necessarily mix.

While the general idea of the movie made a lot of sense the execution was done poorly. The writing was so-so and Tim Robbins, who plays the main character, was not able to make us overlook that fact. As an activist type of movie some people will be able to relate to the actions that the main character does throughout the first part of the movie.

This movie does show a good example about the correct and incorrect ways to try to solve a social issue. The final courtroom scenes are very smart and at the end I had wished that was more how the movie should have been in general. But the first "The Rectifier" parts do not make us root for the main character and the premise of it effecting his family relationship do not add up.

Noise is rated "Not Rated", specifically for an out of place, uncalled for nude scene in the middle of the movie. Otherwise this movie could have garnered an R rating and probably have gotten some more screen time than it did.

Movie Review photo credit: IMDB

Overall Movie Review Rating: I rate this movie as a Blah See - 2 stars

Action Movie Review: Eagle Eye

This is a lovie review of Eagle Eye.

Plot Summary (courtesy of IMDB Movies):

Jerry Shaw is an amiable slacker with an over-achieving twin brother. After his twin dies in an accident, strange things happen to Jerry at a dizzying pace: a fortune shows up in his bank account, weapons are delivered to his flat, and a voice on his cell phone tells him the police are on their way. Jerry follows the voice's instructions, and soon he and a woman he's never met are racing through the city, on to a plane, and eventually to the Pentagon, chased by the FBI. She is Rachel Holloman, a single mom; the voice has threatened her son's death if she doesn't cooperate. The voice seems to know everything. Who is behind it, what is being planned, and why Jerry and Rachel?

Run Time: 118 Minutes

Movie Review:

Eagle Eye is one of those movies you've seen before that always gets done over and over again. The plot for this movie is really poorly thought through. It pretends to be a government conspiracy thriller but turns into a machines are taking over the world action flick. Everything about this movie was formulaic to the T.

But at least it doesn't take long for the movie to come out with it reveal what it's real plot is going to be, rather than leave you hanging until the end for a disappointing finish. I do wish, however, that it would have gone on longer with the suspense as to what was behind the whole ordeal but with a different outcome.

Shia Labouf, who plays the main character, does a decent job but as with a lot of his other action movies he feels forced into the position. He really is not an action hero as much as the film industry is trying to make him into one.

Eagle Eye really has all the components needed for a decent action flick with its chase scenes, explosions, and suspense. There was a little more CGI then really needed to be done for something that was so set into reality, but all in all a pretty seamless movie.

This movie really could have strove to be something a lot more original if the work was put into it. Instead the creators decided to fall back on a worn out plot model and add lots of explosions and some hot actors just to make a movie. It's worth watching if you are in the mood for the thrill but if you are looking for a new movie, this is not the place to turn.

Movie Review photo credit: wikipedia.org

Overall Movie Review Rating: I rate this movie as a Good See - 3 stars

Kids Movie Review: Zathura

This is a movie review of Zathura.

Plot Summary (courtesy of IMDB):

Danny and Walter are two brothers who barely get along even while driving their parents to distraction as their older sister tries to ignore them. Despite their squabbling, the brothers manage cooperate enough to play an old mechanical board game named Zathura. However, after their first move, they find that the game has apparently flung them, their sister and their entire house into outer space. Furthermore, the brothers surmise the only way to return home is to finish the game. However with almost every move, new dangers arise as the siblings find themselves learning to cooperate in ways they never expected as they realize what they mean to each other.

Run Time: 113 Minutes

Movie Review:

Zathura is the sort of sequel to the popular 1995 movie Jumanji starring Robin Williams. Like the first movie, this one is based off two kids who find a game hidden in their house and once they start playing it the world around them changes to reflect what the game says. Aside from the basic theme, however, the movie has nothing else to do with the first one. Robin Williams does not reappear in this movie and instead of a jungle theme this movie takes place in outer space.

This movie is quite good. The plot is well written and has many twists in it that keep you on the edge of your seat. There is a lot of action that will keep kids engrossed and the whole film moves at a quick pace. There are a lot of good comedic bits that are placed perfectly.

The director and his team really put a lot detail into making this film. They forgo CGI in many cases in favor of live action and models and it really pays off. There are very few spots in the film which have a fake feel and most of the film has a very believable quality. This movie does a great job of suspending disbelief to tell its story, even though it has to take some pretty large jumps in artistic license to do so.

Movie Review photo credit: wikipedia.org

Overall Movie Review Rating: I rate this movie as a Great See - 4.5 stars

Kids Movie Review: Monster House

This is the movie review of Monster House.

Plot Summary (courtesy of IMDB):

Little DJ has suspicions about the house across the street and the cranky old man who lives there. When the old man has a heart attack and is carried away by an ambulance, DJ thinks the danger is over. Unfortunately, as he, his friend Chowder, and a candy-selling prep-school girl named Jenny discover, the house itself has plans--plans that include eating all the kids who'll be trick-or-treating that Halloween night!

Run Time: 91 Minutes

Movie Review:

When I got Monster House I thought it would be a fun little kids movie based off an urban legend. We have seen movies like this before with the crotchety old man in some run down scary looking house that the kids avoid, and I thought hilarity woudl ensue. Boy was I wrong. While the movie starts off this way it slowly gets darker and the story is about a house which is haunted. This movie would scare a great many kids and there really is no great humor for adults. I didn't find myself laughing hardly at all during this movie.

The story itself is just over the top unbelievable. It goes from a simple haunting to something completely weird where the house starts walking down the street chasing the kids. The overall story about how the house is haunted is typical and pretty decent but defeating the house by force instead of something more peaceful conveys the wrong message.

The graphics are very eery as well. All the characters have a very plastic feel to them and their synchronization, while true to life, is very odd feeling for a fully digital movie. It almost makes it feel as if the creators weren't sure if they wanted to make this a cartoon like movie or make it realistic and so they chose something in the middle.

All in all, I really didn't find much good to this movie. Sure it is produced by some big names and has a ton of well known actors voicing the parts but that just doesn't make up for how bad this movie is. This movie's main characters are pre-teens and I think that is the only audience that would possibly enjoy this movie as they can relate to it.

Movie Review photo credit: wikipedia.org

Overall Movie Review Rating: I rate this movie as a Blah See - 2 stars

Kids Movie Review: Pirate's Who Don't Do Anything

This is a movie review of Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: A Veggie Tales Movie.

Plot Summary (courtesy of IMDB):

Three lazy misfits - very timid Elliot (Larry the Cucumber), lazy Sedgewick (Mr. Lunt) and no self-confident George (Pa Grape) - dream of the day of putting on a show about pirates. With their own problems of might not having this dream come true, they soon find themselves traveling back in time into the 17th century and begin a quest to rescue a royal family from an evil tyrant, and learn about being pirates.

Run Time: 85 Minutes

Movie Review:

Any fan of Veggie Tales will be quite happy with this feature film. This has everything that parents look for when they want a good movie for their kids, while still being able to enjoy it themselves. There are well placed jokes that adults only would understand (such as "Like sands through the hour glass, so are the last few minutes of our lives.") as well as the gags that get kids laughing and excited.

As an old Veggie Tales watcher I was disappointed to find that the character Bob the Tomato was not in this movie, as well as the fact that the theme song was never sung (although the score had it in the background). I was, however, happy that there was not a direct Christian only message and rather a life lesson instead.

The graphics are very well done and are a much higher quality than people are used to from the video's in the past. There was definitely a lot more detail put into this movie and it really showed. They were really creative with the addition of the cheese curl characters and the rock monsters.

Movie Review photo credit: bigidea.com

Overall Movie Review Rating: I rate this movie as a Great See - 4.5 stars

Privacy Policy for The Good Movie Reviewer

Privacy Policy
These policies are valid from April 20, 2009

Commitment to Online Security

Personal information submitted to The Good Movie Reviewer is only accessible only the owner of this site.

Personal Information Collected at The Good Movie Reviewer
The Good Movie Reviewer may ask you to provide the following types of personal information: name, postal address, email addresses, and phone numbers.
